Thoughts For Thinkers

The tsunami of secrets and riptide of emotions

There is something to be said about the tsunami of secrets and the riptide of emotions. On an individual level, they can carry a person far from the shoreline of themselves, out into the sea of life where they struggle simply to stay afloat. What begins as something hidden beneath the surface gathers force over time. Secrets demand energy to maintain. Emotions require effort to suppress. Together they create an undertow that not only threatens to drown a person, but slowly steals their life force.

Not life in the biological sense, but life in its broader meaning—joy, wonder, curiosity, enthusiasm, vitality, joie de vivre. Energy once available for growth, creativity, relationships, and genuine presence becomes redirected toward survival. A person may continue functioning, even appearing successful on the surface, yet something essential has been diminished. The colors of life become less vibrant. The spirit becomes burdened. Long before drowning occurs, the vitality that makes life worth living has often already begun to disappear.

What is most striking is that this dynamic no longer appears limited to individuals. The tsunami of secrets and the riptide of emotions seem to have become an undercurrent of society itself. It takes political, religious, and personal center stage. Everywhere one looks there seems to be another wave of outrage, another hidden agenda, another emotional current pulling people farther apart. Social media, while promising connection, often appears to intensify the problem. Outrage spreads faster than understanding. Certainty is valued more than curiosity. Reaction replaces reflection. In many ways it seems to siphon away what little joie de vivre may remain.

As a result, many people appear to be treading water rather than truly living. Exhausted by the constant waves, they cling to ideologies, identities, and tribes as though they were life rafts. Yet these often prove incapable of carrying the weight placed upon them.

Perhaps the deepest tragedy is that the life raft of love appears to have been deflated and the line severed. Not love as sentimentality, but love as understanding, compassion, patience, forgiveness, and genuine human connection. These qualities once provided buoyancy amid life’s storms. Without them, people drift further from one another, isolated upon separate currents of perception, belief, and experience.

Stand fast, hope is not lost. A deflated raft is not a destroyed raft. A severed line can be repaired. Every act of honesty weakens the power of secrets. Every effort to understand the source of our emotions lessens the force of the undertow. Every choice to listen rather than condemn, to seek understanding rather than victory, adds a little air back into the chambers of love.

The way forward is not found in fighting the waves themselves, but in understanding the forces beneath them. For it is often the hidden currents—the secrets we carry, the emotions we suppress, and the divisions we cultivate—that steal our vitality and pull us under. By bringing these into the light, we may recover not only our footing, but also the joy, wonder, and vitality that make the voyage across the sea of life worth taking in the first place.
