Being a pupil

“When the pupil is ready, the teacher will come” is a profound phrase. It suggests that before beneficial information can be received, there must first be a foundation of readiness. The teacher may have been there all along, but until the student is prepared, the lesson often goes unnoticed.

Learning is not a passive process. It is engaging, interactive, and intentional. Perhaps this is why we are encouraged to ask, seek, and knock. Each of these implies engagement and participation. Ask questions. Seek understanding. Knock on doors of possibility. Growth requires movement on our part.

It can be said that one reason we are here is to learn, grow, and experience. That too is a statement of engagement. Life is not simply something that happens to us; it is an opportunity to participate in our own development.

Experiences of life become the curriculum. Conversations, books, hardships, moments of stillness, and unexpected encounters all have potential to become teachers. Some lessons arrive gently, others through challenge. What often determines their value is our readiness to receive them.

As we become more present and more intentional, we begin to recognize that teachers appear in many forms. The invitation is not merely to wait for wisdom to arrive, but to cultivate the openness and curiosity which allows us to recognize it when it does.

Take advantage of the opportunity. Ask. Seek. Knock. The next lesson may already be standing at the door.
